Relational Play and Creative Arts Therapy for Young People
As children mature, play changes. Liz offers therapy sessions which mirror the development and interests of children as they grow into young people.
Young people face an increasingly complex world at home, school and in the wider community. Concerns and expression of these are often specific to adolescents as they search for identity and independence. Creative and relational therapy can support young people to explore concerns and expand the way they express feelings and understand relationships with others and themselves.
With a focus on the therapeutic relationship, a blend of directive and nondirective approaches invites young people to access a range of resources and modalities such as sand tray, clay and art and drama to express aspects which may be difficult to articulate another way.
Expertise of skill in any of these areas is not necessary as it is the creative process which enables growth. Understanding a young person’s interests is part of the growth of the relationship and these might be used in sessions.
Evidence shows that the use of creative therapies increases emotional wellbeing and resilience and is effective for young people who are experiencing a range or adverse experiences.
Reasons for referral include, anxiety and stress, academic pressure, self-harm, family and relationship issues, peer relationships, identify and self-esteem, bullying, childhood abuse, grief and loss, societal expectations and life transitions and adjustments.
Liz offers sessions in her own therapy space in Bovey Tracey as well as local schools and hired venues. Liz takes private referrals, works with Social Care and is an approved provider for the Adoption Support Fund, Early help and other agencies.
